There was a dramatic spectacle at Shiswa village in Shinyalu, Kakamega County after locals thoroughly whipped the corpse of a man who had committed suicide.
His kin could not understand why Joseph Likabo, 60, took his life, seeing as he never left a suicide note.
Since he had not shown any signs of being disturbed and had a sound mind, they blamed the unfortunate incident to evil spirits.
The deceased wife, Catherine Bunoro Likabo said her husband had a small domestic argument with her before he left the house at midnight, only to be found dangling on a mango tree hours later.
“He left me in the house and closed the door. I didn’t know he had ill intentions. I was surprised to be woken up that my husband had hanged himself,” Mrs Likabo said.

According to the deceased’s son, Patrick matasio, community elders were summoned and after consultation they authorised for the elders to whip the dead man as part of mandatory rituals.
The elders cleansed the home, yelled incantations and poured libations whilst whipping the corpse in a bid to rid the home of evil spirits.
“It is the tradition, whoever commits suicide in our community is usually subjected to a thorough whipping and buried at night,” said Matasio.
Confirming the incident, area Chief Thomas Aseka, urged locals to solve family issues amicably.
