A 27-year-old Administration Police officer, Maureen Jebitok, attached to Litein AP camp allegedly turned her AK-47 rifle on herself over her husband’s philandering ways.

Her neighbours in the AP staff quarters located near the Bureti constituency Deputy County Commissioner’s office, reportedly overheard the deceased arguing with her husband, Victor Kipchumba Rono, after he allegedly received a love text message from another woman.

The fellow 27-year-old and a Kenya Wildlife Service ranger, whose station is in Naro Moru in Nyeri, was off duty at the time of the incident and had been staying at his wife’s house.

Bureti District Administration Police Commandant Samson Gathuku said they had taken hold of the KWS ranger’s cell-phone for investigations.

“At around 9.30pm I was informed that Maureen Jebitok had allegedly shot herself in her house where she was in the company of her husband,” he said.

Gathuku pointed out that the deceased had been issued with the rifle at 6pm on Friday in preparation for her night duty guarding the Bureti Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission offices.

He described the late Jebitok as a dedicated AP officer who loved her job. “She, however, didn’t like to socialise and it was therefore difficult to know whether anything was bothering her,” he said.

But Bureti Directorate of Criminal Investigations officers pointed out that as a KWS ranger, the deceased’s husband was capable of handling a rifle and they were, therefore, not ruling anything out.

“We interrogated the KWS ranger because as an officer, he is capable of handling the rifle. The gun was taken for forensic analysis,” said Stephen Ole Tanki, the Bureti District Criminal Investigation Officer.

He said they were pursuing two lines of investigations; whether the incident was suicide as claimed by the deceased’s husband or a murder case.
