A swift move by an 83-year-old granny to grab and squeeze a 33-year-old suspected rapist’s testicle saved her from the nasty ordeal, a High Court in Nanyuki was told.
Paul Maina, a casual labourer, was found guilty of having attempted to rape the granny on June 3, 2015. His six years jail term was last week confirmed after his appeal flopped.
He got five years for the attempted rape and an additional year in another count for assaulting and injuring the octogenarian in the face and ribs.
Maina had appealed the punishment, claiming that he had reformed and that he had received enough counselling during his two-year stay in jail.
During the hearing, it was stated that on the material morning, around 3am, the granny was fast asleep when a man broke into her house.
She shone her torch and noticed it the appellant, who was her neighbour. She tried to scream but was overpowered by the assailant who grabbed her by the neck and gagged her mouth.
The court was told that appellant dragged her and as a result she injured her face and ribs. The court was told that Maina tried to forcefully undress the granny but tripped and fell.

It was at that moment that the granny reportedly grabbed his testicles and squeezed them, forcing him to wail for help. The groans and commotion attracted neighbours who arrived just when Maina was taking off.
He was, however, caught and subjected to mob injustice before being handed over to police who arraigned him in court. During cross examination, Maina shocked those in attendance when he confessed his sins, saying: “I do not have any questions. I only ask her to forgive me”.
However, the granny revealed that following the incident, she developed high blood pressure, something she had never experienced in her entire life.
High court judge Mary Kasongo, in ruling, stated that the offence was indeed heinous since sexual offences are devastating to anyone of that elderly age.
“No wonder the granny said that after the attack she developed high blood pressure. There is no basis for interfering with the trial court’s sentence,” she stated in her judgment, dismissing the appeal and confirmed the trial court’s sentence.
