Eldoret man attempts suicide after girlfriend turned down marriage proposal

A fourth year student at a public university in Rift Valley caused panic and uproar in Eldoret’s Langas area, Uasin Gishu County, after he unsuccessfully attempted to kill himself last weekend.

This was after the love of his life, also a student in one of the satellite campuses in Eldoret rejected his marriage proposal. The Bachelors of Arts in Education student had gone home for a weekend which is a stone’s throw away from the university. Things seemed wrong that morning as the student, an early riser, failed to show up for his breakfast, even as his parents eagerly waited for him.

Out of curiosity, his father went into his hut to check on him. Upon opening the door, the father almost fainted in disbelief on what met his eyes.

His son’s rather neat house was noticeably ‘upside down’, with papers and pictures of a lady scattered all over the floor as the boy lay lifeless on the bed.

Hurting rejection

One thing, however, was evident — an empty bottle of insecticide used to kill ticks was on the table. A clear indication that the young man had attempted to poison himself. The old man began wailing before he fainted. Other family members came and found out that the young man still had a pulse.

After administering first aid to the duo, they rushed the young man to the area’s referral hospital where he is still recuperating.

All seemed well for the early 20’s young man as he was soon going to bid goodbye the education system. To crown it all, he had planned to immediately marry his campus sweetheart, only for her to turn down the marriage proposal.

She reportedly cited interest in pursuing a post graduate degree and securing a job before settling down. Something that did not go down well with the young man. He chose to go and be with the angels in heaven instead.

Luckily, it did not happen. According to a suicide note found in his hut, the young man had indicated that he found no reason to live after the love of his life refused to marry him as soon as they cleared campus.

“Since she has turned down my proposal, it is time forget the whole business of living,” read part of the letter.

Drama ensued in the hospital when his girlfriend visited him as he broke into tears, weeping in full view of his entire family. Efforts to calm him bore no fruits and no amount of persuasion by his father could cool him down.

The family is believed to be working round the clock to ensure the relationship thrives and leads into marriage.

The young man has now been placed on suicide watch by his family, with every move he makes being monitored.
