Grown-ups must learn to 'fight' in private

Some Kenyans, be they couples, mates, or mere friends, are in the habit of turning public spaces into theatres of the absurd. Trivial private matters they would have solved amicably elsewhere, preferably in a bedroom somewhere, always necessitate this silly behavior, in most cases.

It is shameless when grown-ups cannot resolve their differences – be it physically or through dialogue – in private. It beats me how such types have absolutely no qualms airing their dirty linen in public for all and sundry.

Hungry monkeys

The interesting thing about these kinds of couples, mates or friends is that they hardly care about their position in society. When the dung hits the fan, decorum takes a back seat and, like hungry monkeys in the jungle, they go hummer-and-tongs at each other.

They do this either verbally, physically or both in public without a care in the world.

You must be living under a rock if you missed out on the headline-grabbing incident between Nairobi Senator Mike ‘Sonko’ Mbuvi and the Nairobi Woman Rep Rachael Shebesh. Only last year the two had their alleged photos leaked to the Internet before Sonko claimed that they were not real but ‘photoshopped’.

Last week, they were back in the news, of course for the wrong reasons, this time round allegedly fighting over a Sh8.5 Range Rover gift from Sonko to Shebesh.

It is not clear under what circumstances the senator bought the alleged prized car. However, one thing is clear, the two are setting a very bad example to young people who look up to them as role models.

Anyway, as a sage once told me, it doesn’t matter how prominent a couple, mates, or friends are, they should never bring their business to the streets.

Just because they are public figures doesn’t mean they have to solve their private matters in public!

Look, waheshimiwa, wise couples, mates, friends or whatever you are to each other, fight behind closed doors. You see all these people who peck, kiss and hug in public, they too fight but in the privacy of their bedrooms.

And at times, so vicious are these fights that family pets such as cats take cover to avoid being hit by flying objects.

Many will tell you they have lost count of the number of drinking glasses that have been broken during such fights in their houses.

Grown-ups should fight in decorum. Not exposing their juvenile sides in public. Worse still, if the involved parties are senior people in society.
