The mysterious death of an 18-year-old man on New Year’s eve has left a Kiambu family shattered.

Raymond Ikonya Kimani’s body was found in a pool of blood moments after a fight broke out at a club he had gone to.

Paul Kimani and Elizabeth Ngina lost their first-born son moments after he left his grandmother’s home in Kangoya village for Kiambu town.

Five people, including the owner of the club, have recorded statements with police.

“Someone attacked us from behind as we arrived at the club for no good reason. We fought back, and when the fight got fierce, we took off,” claimed a close friend to the late Ray, as he was popularly known.

Ray and his friend, only identified as Kelvin, allegedly walked back to the club after the attack.

“When the owner of the club spotted us, he, together with his brother charged after us armed with a piece of wood. That was the last time I saw Raymond alive,” claimed Kelvin.

A watchman at the building claimed in his statement to police that he repulsed seven people who were running behind Raymond.

The guard also claimed he heard ‘something’ fall from the top floors, and reported the matter to police. It was however not clear why he decided to report to the police that someone had committed suicide without verifying what had actually happened.

The family claims their son did not commit suicide, but was murdered.

Kiambu DCIO Samson Kiptum has launched investigations into the matter amid earlier claims that an officer was attempting to cover up the death.

“We want the police to bring to book the culprits no matter who they are. Our son cannot die just like that. The truth must be told before we bury him” said Nginyo Ikonya, the family’s spokesperson.

Kiptum, while confirming the incident, said Christians in the neighbourhood had earlier raised concerns after the club owner started letting strippers into the club.
