The number of pedestrians dying on the Thika Superhighway is on the rise.
More than 20 pedestrians are arrested daily and charged in city courts for crossing the road on undesignated spots.
According to the Kasarani Divisional Traffic Officer, Elena Wamuyu, many pedestrians cross the road carelessly. Arrested individuals are fined Sh500.
Wamuyu told The Nairobian that pedestrians are unwilling to use footbridges.
Statistics released by the Senate Committee on Transport and Infrastructure a few weeks ago indicated that about 209 pedestrians have been killed by motorists along the Thika Superhighway since 2012.
The committee also reported that 278 have been injured while crossing the busy highway on prohibited and dangerous points, while 783 have been arraigned in court for crossing at illegal points. Some pedestrians claim some of the footbridges are insecure at night.
