Is Mpeketoni OCPD jinxed?

OCPD Amos Cheboi

Whenever he has been transferred, a tragedy occurs leaving people dead and wounded. His latest work station is Lamu West where suspected Al Shabaab militia raided, leaving more than 60 people dead in Mpeketoni, Kibaoni and Poromokoni.

He was barely two-months old in the area after being deployed from Vigilance House. He had been recalled last year following sporadic attacks in Bungoma County where more than 50 people died as hundreds were left maimed.

In the wake of violence meted on residents at night, Amos Cheboi who was Bungoma South OCPD was transferred to Vigilance House. At the height of the Mungiki macabre killings in 2006 in parts of Kiambu, Cheboi was the man in charge before he was removed over runaway insecurity.

Mungiki had made Kiambu insecure through extortions and beheadings leaving many dead. Before being brought to Kiambu, Cheboi had served in the same capacity in Marsabit where he was moved after allegedly failing to contain a trail of bloodshed involving members of two clans climaxing in the Turbi massacre on the morning of January 12, 2005.

More than 70 people including 18 children were shot dead in the raid carried out by more than 30 armed militiamen who opened fire indiscriminately in Turbi village killing and maiming innocent residents before proceeding to a nearby primary school where they shot dead 18 pupils and injured many others.

He briefly served in volatile Turkana region during the Todonyang'a killings before being transferred to Bungoma. Cheboi had barely settled in Lamu when bad luck followed him for the umpteenth time.

Cheboi was however not among those interdicted and as per President Uhuru's directive. Police boss David Kimaiyo named county commanders APS Rashid, KPS Leonard Omollo, DAPC Bonaya as those interdicted while OCS Aden Ali was transferred with immediate effect.
