City Hall kills 250 dogs and still out to get more

City News

Dead dogs

Animal rights activists are furious that the county government has put down more than 250 canines in Nairobi.

Kenya Society for Protection and Care for Animals (KSPCA) told The Nairobian an ongoing campaign to kill stray dogs in the city is illegal but City Hall has an upper hand.

Ben Atsiaya, an officer at KSPCA, said: “It is sad that city county officers are killing innocent animals. It poses more danger because they use (poisoned) meat which could be eaten by people or other animals. We have had several meetings with them before on how the exercise ought to be conducted but they do it secretly without informing us.”

The city government has been running a campaign to rid Nairobi estates of stray dogs.

The campaign is run by the county’s departments of communicable disease and veterinary .

“People have been saying we conducted the exercise after bedbug reports in the media last month, but we usually eradicate stray dogs annually. In fact, last year we killed more than 400 dogs, this year the number could be higher,” James Mugo, the deputy officer of communicable and disease control department told The Nairobian

So far the campaign has covered Makadara, Kasarani and Lang’ata.

In Makadara alone, City Hall put down 118 stray dogs.  They use poison — Strickening — on meat to kill the hounds.

Strickening kills instantly, but the officers have to ensure  the dogs are not be eaten by any other animal or human being.

According to the officer, stray dogs are not only those roaming in the shopping centres but also those found within the estates.

“Our officers faced a rough time in Kaloleni. Some young men demanded that we get a permit from Raila Odinga to kill the stray dogs. Luckily we had a police officer who had accompanied us,” Dr Mugo said.

The vet revealed that carcasses are dumped together with estate garbage at the Dandora dumpsite.

However, the campaign has been halted due to shortage of funds.

Mugo said it is costly to buy meat (mostly liver) to snare the dogs, and employ security officers to accompany City Hall vets to the field.
