Traffic police have complained of being harassed by their former boss who is an owner of 14 matatus.

The officers accused former Nairobi PPO Njue Njagi of intimidating and harassing them whenever they seize his vehicles for inspection.

The latest such harassment happened on March 25 when Njagi stormed a meeting of senior traffic officers at the Nairobi Area offices and demanded to know why his vehicles were being detained.

The meeting of all Divisional Traffic Officers (DTOs) was being chaired by city boss Edward Mwamburi when Njagi walked in.

“He asked where Mwamburi is before he started to lecture and warn us against harassing his vehicles. That was wrong,” said one DTO.

All along, Mwamburi did not utter a word. Njagi walked out of the meeting later on.

The officer added Njagi has 14 matatus in the city and they are at sometimes driven carelessly. The vehicles (City Shuttle) ply on the city streets.

“The other day one of the matatus hit and seriously injured a pedestrian but the driver did not stop and instead he hid the vehicle for three days before it was finally detained,” added another officer.

Njagi served as the PPO in Nairobi during the 2007/2008 post election violence before he was moved to police headquarters where he served as the head of operations.

He retired from office last year. Yesterday, he refused to comment on the incident.

Mwamburi said the matter is being addressed somewhere else.
