Can raw quail eggs be used as viagra – the sex-enhancing substance?
This is the debate that has captivated Nairobians on the streets and on social media following a likely rumour of ‘an experiment’ that turned tragic. A news report on February 3 claimed a 31-year-old father of two from Komarock died after he ate raw quail eggs to boost his performance in bed.
Fox News Africa claimed the widow reported that on February 1, her husband left to work and came back with 30 quail eggs.
He allegedly told her that he wanted to incubate the eggs so that they hatch because the quail business had become the in-thing in Nairobi. At night, the deceased started complaining of stomach pain and was taken to hospital, unfortunately he was declared dead on arrival.
On checking in the kitchen, the mother of two discovered that all the 30 eggs had been consumed. She concluded that her husband had eaten them. An administrator in Komarock confirmed the incident saying that investigations are under way to establish if the man died from eating the eggs, or from some other causes.
The Nairobian could not however reach the man’s family or independently verify the death from police sources. However, a physician at the Kenyatta National Hospital told The Nairobian that if claims that the death was caused by quail eggs were indeed true, then it was a rare case.
Dr John Ong’ech said he does not know of the existence of quail eggs as aphrodisiacs (sex-enhancing mixtures).
“I wouldn’t advise anybody to eat quail eggs to boost their libido,” he said. “It would be prudent to seek the opinion of a specialised medic.”
He said men experience low libido as a result of various problems such as psychosocial instability.
“They might be fine physically and in good shape. However, the brain controls sex; it’s an act of the mind that’s expressed physically. If a man is not sufficiently settled in their mind, they may never rise to the occasion,” Ong’ech said.
According to the medic, other situations may arise: like a viral or bacterial infection, illnesses such as diabetes, or a dysfunctional endocrine system – which controls the male sex hormone testosterone.
“What we have ascertained so far in science is that fresh steamed vegetables (greens), cashew nuts, almonds, avocados, groundnuts, and fruits such as watermelons considerably improve a man’s libido. Healthy living, regular exercise and proper nutrition should be just enough for a healthy libido,” he said.
“I am not privy to the contents of quail eggs. Until the contents of the eggs are made known to scientists, I can’t comment on their efficacy.”
There have been several other incidents around the world that have turned tragic following the consumption quail eggs.
In 2012, a Tunisian man died after eating 28 raw eggs in one go for a bet.
Dhaou Fatnassi, 20, allegedly wagered a friend he could eat 30 raw eggs in a row, for which he would receive an undisclosed sum.
