Daring motorbike robbers on Uhuru Highway attacked an MP with his family near Laico Regency Hotel.
Bahati MP Kimani Ngunjiri (pictured) told the police the robbers asked his children to give up his mobile phones and money that he had.
Police are doubting the MP’s version of the story because they have a case against him
Kimani is on trial for allegedly assaulting an officer while police and the courts have refused to give him back hs gu.
Although the MPs have said they have to verify the ‘claims’, cases of attacks by robbers on boda boda have risen sharply in the CBD.
Two weeks ago, The Nairobian revealed that the robbers on motorcycles had been attacking posh homes in Karen.
Police said they are investigating claims by Kimani that he was on November 20 night attacked by the thugs on a motorbike and robbed of his mobile phones and Sh1,000.
He had told the police that the robbers attacked him near Laico Regency Hotel on Uhuru Highway at about 9.30 pm.
The MP said the attackers knocked the window of his car before his children surrendered the mobile phones and the cash.
He said afterwards the attackers jumped back to their motorbikes and sped off as police chased them.
No one was injured in the incident. But Central police boss Patrick Oduma has said they doubt the theory because no motorbikes usually operate around Laico Regency at night.
“There were officers on patrol in the area at the time and they say they did not witness the incident and that there was no traffic jam as alleged by the legislator. We are however investigating the incident,” said Oduma.
It is not clear if the MP had his bodyguard then.
Oduma said a special team has been assigned to the investigations into the robery.
The MP later recorded a statement at the Central police station before leaving.
Cases of attacks on the road at night by thugs targeting valuables have been on the rise.
Police have in the past killed some of the attackers.
Kimani was in August charged in a Nakuru court with six counts related to an incident where he assaulted a traffic policewoman.
He also had his gun withdrawn following the case of assault.
The MP faced two separate charges after he allegedly assaulted police officer Maria Mutheo while she was on official duty in Nakuru.
