I beat a seven-foot ‘giant’ to lead students at KU

Campus Vibe

I studied for a Bachelor of Education (Arts and Political Sciences) degree at Kenyatta University. That was between 2002 and 2006.

Of all the subjects, I loved History of Kenya, as it was most satisfying getting to understand a lot of issues about my country. Prof Wanyonyi who taught me the subject did it so well.

Talking of lecturers, I would say that one Dr Nyaga was my most memorable one. He was funny, very smart and friendly.

I also had memorable classmates like nominated MP Isaac Mwaura and Homa Bay Women Rep Gladys Wanga. Campus life saw me hustle a lot to make extra cash and take care of my bills. I operated a small shop in campus and a printing business which gave me some good money.

I also got into campus politics, even though I was a disabled person. Students made me the Academic Secretary at Kenyatta University Students Association after beating nine contestants, among them a seven-foot ‘giant.’

Running for office as a disabled person was not easy. I had to contend with a lot of obscenities inscribed on my posters by other contestants in an attempt to discourage me.

Apart from rigorous academic work, we would go clubbing in Kahawa West, especially when broke. We would occasionally go to the city whenever we were loaded with boom at the start of the semester.

And girls liked me just because I was short and talkative. I was unique. But I only had one girlfriend throughout my campus years.

My most memorable day in campus was when Hon Isaac Mwaura and I got lost in our very first day in campus. We spent hours trying to locate the administration block, since the many buildings and corridors were confusing.

William Ndung’u graduated from Kenyatta University class of 2006. He is the Leader and Founder, The Association of People with Dwarfism - Kenya (APD-K).
