Campus girls are increasingly shying away from active leadership roles in our local universities.
In fact, the number of female student leaders in Kenyan universities is less than the-one third stipulated in the Constitution.
Interestingly, the same cannot be said of our lasses who venture abroad to further their studies.
Campus Vibe’s Abuta Ogeto spoke to two female university students who serve in leadership positions in foreign lands.
Name:Tessy Cherono Maritim (left)
Age: 20
Home: Eldoret
University: University of Manchester, UK.
Position: Diversity Officer
She used social media to campaign, beating six other ladies from different countries to the seat. Tessy leads 40,000 students and believes in democracy. She is also the founder of The Arena, an organisation that mentors students in her native Eldoret. “My work can be so demanding, so much that I don’t get time to unwind,” she says.
Name: Patricia Mollyne Mataga (right)
Home: Kapsabet
University: University of Pretoria, South Africa
Position: Anti-Racism Campaigner
Her experiences in her first-year made her transform from a reserved Kapsabet girl to a fierce leader. She came face to face with racism, which prompted her into uniting fellow black students to fight discrimination. Now, the university is a better place and Patricia is a darling of fellow students, especially non-South Africans. They call her the East African lioness. Patricia is studying commerce.
