Chapati ‘madondo’ would do for lunch-Maureen Koech

Campus Vibe

Maureen Koech

I think I attended one of the most conservative institutions. Things were a little bit strict as we even had an official dress code.

Much as it seemed awkward in the beginning, I still appreciated the institution for how it helped us uphold principles and shape our characters.

I focused a lot on books even though the course I studied was not my thing. I was never cut out to be an IT geek, so I feel I was a little misplaced ‘course-wise’.

When I discovered I could act, I shifted my focus. That is why I had to defer my studies for a while.

I used to love taking the college bus, because it was a free ride. Many times you would find me hanging around just to get that ride. I wasn’t broke though, I did it just for fun.

I had many friends in college. However, I never dated while in campus. I spent most of my time acting. I loved it. I was a member of the drama society, also known as DRAMSOC. In 2010, I went for auditions for KTN’s ‘Changing Times,’ and got selected. Some guys were envious because that was a big production.

I became a little distant with friends around that time because I concentrated a lot on my acting.

I would buy chapati with beef stew, or madondo (beans) at Siwaka Plaza, which was next to our college. It was my best and it was cheap. I would then grab ice-cream for just Sh30.

My accounting lecturer was the harshest. In fact, I avoided his classes most of the time. I respected him a lot though.

Maureen Koech is an actress in KTN’s production ‘Changing Times.’ She was a student at Strathmore University, pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Business Information Technology.
