On January 18, 2025, the two-time Olympic gold medalist and world record holder became officially engaged to Dr. Mercy Chumbaa Barchok in a glamorous ceremony held at the picturesque Sergoit Gardens in Uasin Gishu County. The elegant and intimate affair brought together prominent figures from the athletics world, making it not only a celebration of love but also a gathering of champions. Rudisha, best known for his unparalleled achievements on the track, was surrounded by his closest allies in the athletics world as he began this new chapter of his life. The groomsmen featured some of Kenya's finest athletes, including reigning 800m Olympic champion Emmanuel Wanyonyi, who is steadily inching closer to breaking Rudisha's long-standing world record of 1:40.91. Also among the distinguished groomsmen was marathoner Augustine Choge, an accomplished name in long-distance running. The trio of elite athletes and the other groomsmen exuded style and elegance, dressed in coordinated navy-blue shirts and trousers, each featuring a subtle yet intricate pattern that enhanced the festive atmosphere. Photos shared by Rudisha on his WhatsApp status showed smiles, laughter, and an undeniable sense of camaraderie, capturing the spirit of unity and joy that defined the event. Other world beating athletes who graced the glamorous event include retired multiple 3000m world champion Ezekiel Kemboi, 1500m world champion Asbel Kiprop, Rudisha's former pacemaker Sammy Tangui, former 800m women's champion Janeth Jepkosgei, popularly known as Eldoret Express, former Commonwealth Games champion Japhet Kimutai and Jerry Maritim. To give fans and friends a glimpse into the day's significance, Rudisha shared the official invitation card on his social media platforms. The card read: "We, Dr. Mercy Chumbaa & David Rudisha, with the blessings of our parents, invite you to our engagement and farewell party to be held on 18th, January 2025 from 10 am at Sergoit Gardens, along Moiben Road, Uasin Gishu County. Be Blessed as you Purpose to Attend." The intimate affair showcased Rudisha's love for attention to detail and elegance. Adding to the excitement, the world record holder offered a sneak peek of Dr Chumbaa's wedding gown; a floor-length masterpiece that radiates sophistication. The gown's fitted silhouette accentuated the bride-to-be's figure, while intricate lace detailing in a dusty rose hue added a touch of romance. Sparkling embellishments caught the light, elevating the gown's charm, and a dramatic one-shoulder detail created a contemporary edge that mirrored the couple's modern love story. Little is known about Dr Chumbaa, the woman who has captured Rudisha's heart, other than a few glimpses offered by the athlete himself. In a Facebook post shared in December 2023, Rudisha congratulated Chumbaa on her academic achievements, posting a photo of the two of them together. In the picture, Chumbaa was clad in a graduation gown, looking radiant and accomplished. Rudisha captioned the post with the message: "Congratulations Dr. MJ Barchok for this great achievement. You deserve it. Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery #UoN." This snippet offered a rare insight into Chumbaa's professional life as a graduate of the University of Nairobi's prestigious Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery programme. While her life has largely remained out of the public eye, her quiet strength and dedication to her career speak volumes about the woman who will soon walk alongside Rudisha as his wife. For Rudisha, the engagement marks not only a personal triumph but also a turning point in a life that has seen its share of ups and downs. While his career has been one of unparalleled success, defined by his world record-breaking performance of 1:40.91 at the 2012 London Olympics, his personal life has been marred by struggles that tested his resilience. In 2019, Rudisha faced significant personal and professional challenges, including a knee injury that kept him off the track for nearly a year. The injury coincided with a tumultuous period in his marriage to Lizzy Naanyu, the mother of his two children. The couple's relationship had been under public scrutiny, with rumours of infidelity and domestic disputes swirling around the athlete. In July 2019, Naanyu took to Facebook in an alarming post, accusing Rudisha of frustration. "David Lekuta Rudisha, really stop frustrating me with my kids. To my family, my heart is heavy I can't hold anymore. I love u all," she wrote, shedding light on the cracks in their marriage. The emotional post came months after reports emerged that the couple's relationship was strained, with allegations of Rudisha's involvement with another woman, Samantha Tangui, adding to the controversy. On May 9 2014, Rudisha missed the first leg of the 2014 Diamond League series in Doha, Qatar because of a foot injury. He had been off track for almost a year due to a knee injury he suffered in New York in June 2013. Long period of inactivity had affected the career of the legendary athlete who is considered the most outstanding athlete together with Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt. Rudisha and Bolt stunned the world when they won the most spectacular gold medals within minutes of the London 2012 Games. There have, however, been rumours that Rudisha's injuries were linked to a domestic dispute with his wife of many years, Naanyu. Sources told The Nairobian that possible domestic fights between Rudisha and Naanyu may have caused him to keep off track. The sources in Eldoret, where Samantha resided, indicated Naanyu was aware and had severally clashed with her husband over his mistress. However when the claims surfaced then, Naanyu dismissed them as not true. It was alleged Naanyu and the street vendors "almost beat Samantha up" before she was rescued by an unknown motorist driving a top-of the-range car allegedly belonging to Rudisha. "That was really a stunt. It left Lizzie (Naanyu) and her gang of women with nothing else to do other than shout unprintable words as the vehicle was being driven away from the scene," one of the sources said. When The Nairobian reached out to Samantha on her mobile phone, the woman went on the defensive before hanging up. "When did you hear those rumours? They are falsehoods meant to tarnish his name because of his stature. How long has this rumour been doing the rounds?" she posed. It was claimed Rudisha and Samantha met through his close association with her uncle Tangui, the athlete's pacesetter. Tangui would later acknowledge about the rumours between Rudisha and Samantha. "Yes, Samantha is my niece and there have been some rumours that link my track mate with her; but I am in no position to confirm any of this," he said. Rudisha and Naanyu got married in Kilgoris in 2010 in a Maasai wedding ceremony, soon after he was crowned IAAF World Athlete of the Year. On the injury that kept him off the tracks for awhile, Rudisha laughed off claims that he suffered after a fight with his wife. The police officer said he sustained the injury while taking part in a race in New York. "My injuries are genuine from the sport and hard training, I even underwent a keyhole surgery after an ultra-sound scan which revealed that I had an injury deep in the middle of my knee, not that I was hurt in a domestic altercation," Rudisha said. Rudisha, in interviews, has been candid about how these personal struggles affected him. Speaking to the BBC in 2020, he revealed that his injuries, combined with the pressures of his personal life, led to a period of socialising and weight gain. "I have never really directly spoken about partying but you know just a social life that everybody has the right to enjoy. Whenever we have athletes' meetings, sometimes we got to socialise. That's is normal life. I never meant anything extreme. Sometimes when you have friends, you go out and throw a party and so forth," he once said. In an October 2019 interview, Rudisha candidly shared how he turned to partying as a way to cope with the pressures stemming from his personal and professional challenges. He admitted that during this difficult period, he struggled with weight management and began indulging in what he described as "a little bit of partying". "With everything else going on in my life, the pressure sometimes got to me. To release it I'd often hang out with friends, partying too much. It's not something you intend to come your way but sometimes during periods like that, you look for a bit of distraction to distract yourself," he said. Despite the challenges, Rudisha maintained his determination to recover and return to his best. However, his comeback efforts were dealt another blow with the passing of his father, Daniel Rudisha, a former Olympic medalist himself. The loss added to the emotional toll on the athlete, who was already grappling with physical injuries and marital strife. Now retired from competitive athletics, Rudisha appears to have found solace and stability in his relationship with Dr Chumbaa. The engagement, a fresh start for the iconic athlete, marking a new chapter that combines love, family, and personal growth. Adding to the festive mood of the ceremony, decorated 3000m steeplechase champion Ezekiel Kemboi and former 1500m world champion Asbel Kiprop lit up the event with their incredible dance moves. The two champions stole the show with their footwork, energising the guests and proving that their talents extend beyond the track. Their lively performances drew cheers and applause, further enhancing the joyous atmosphere of the couple's special day.
