The death of Maina Njenga’s wife, Virginia Nyakio, was never planned. The millions she carried when police went to murder her driver was too tempting — witnesses were never to be left alive. Nyakio was one such witness.
The death squad had been instructed to eliminate Mungiki adherent, Ndungu wa Wagacha, who was trailed and waylaid alongside Nyakio. The two were taken to Ngong Forest for the night, before being driven towards Emali along Mombasa Road the following day.
Nyakio had with her Sh5 million meant to pay workers and that is the police killed her. It was for the money. “They set upon Mrs Njenga and slashed her head. She was not actually raped, but a bottle was inserted in her private parts. They killed her driver by beating him with rungus,” Kirinya confessed in his affidavit.
The officers, guilt free, drove back to Nairobi with the dead bodies in the boots of their cars. The bodies stayed in the boots until the next day when they drove to Gatundu where they were dumped. Two officers were then promoted to the ranks of sergeants while 12 officers were promoted to the ranks of corporals.
