It was as dramatic as they come as the flamboyant Music Copyright Society of Kenya CEO Maurice Okoth, went down on one knee on live TV, proposing to his longtime girlfriend and love of his life Shamillah Khadija Kiptoo on Friday evening.

Maurice appeared on the StarTimes pay TV before the magic words scrolled down the screen: “Shamillah Khadijah Kiptoo, will you marry me…”

An awe stricken Shamillah then received her man, accepting his hand in marriage before the whole world, that setting into motion the much-awaited wedding ceremony to take place in Nairobi this Friday. Another ceremony will be held in April, next year.

On Friday, behind Maurice will be Kevin Ombajo aka Big Kev as the best man while Catherine Karee Parker will be the best lady.

On Saturday, Okoth changed his name from Maurice to Mahmoud after converting to Islam in a process counseled by his erstwhile friend and CEO of Triple P TV Kamal Sohrab at Kilimani Mosque Department of Defense headquarters.

After we exclusively broke the news through our digital SDE flat form, social media went on overdrive with the debate centering on Maurice’s conversion.

“I know the conversion is a sensitive matter especially with all the religious issues being raised with ill motives to divide Christians and Muslims. We are one people. This is a choice I made after informing and agreeing with my fiancée and family,” Maurice defended.
