Celebrated singer Crystal Asige has spoken about her nomination to the Senate by the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Party.
Taking to social media, the former Sol generation artists expressed her gratitude to Azimio La Umoja coalition flagbearer Raila Odinga, terming the nomination an honour and a win for Persons Living With Disabilities (PLWDs) and other minority groups across the country.
“The ODM Party has nominated me for the senate position in the Persons with Disability category. There is never a better measure of what a person is than what he does when he is absolutely free to choose' - William M. Bulger. This week Hon. Raila Odinga chose to leave no Kenyan behind - no matter their ability or disability. I consider this Senate nomination by Baba and ODM to be an honour and count this as a win for the communities I represent,” Asige wrote in part.
She went on to congratulate her fellow nominee Nickson Ochieng, acknowledging his contributions to the welfare of the PLWDs.
“A win for Persons with Disabilities, a win for women, and a win for the youth in Kenya. I also extend my appreciation to my fellow nominee, Nickson Ochieng’ for the immense contribution he continues to make for the PWDs community,” she added.
Crystal who left Sol Generation barely 10 months after she signed further expressed gratitude to her family and friends for always supporting and cheering her on.
“I am incredibly grateful to my lifelong support system, from family, friends and to my #Wafuasi who have never ceased to believe in me. God makes me smile every time He reminds me that hardships often prepare ordinary people for an extraordinary destiny. Always by Faith not by sight,” she wrote.
The singer-songwriter who grew up in Mombasa was diagnosed with glaucoma in her early 20s, losing her sight. Despite this, she has made some great achievements, bursting into the limelight as the first lady on Sauti Sol's premium label, Sol Generation.
The award-winning group, however, split towards the end of 2019. In a previous interview with the Standard, she revealed that there was no animosity.
“I wasn’t gonna sit there and just take what’s being given. As much as I’m a ‘disabled’ artiste, I work hard, and I earn everything. I manifest everything,” she said.
