South African Zulu king Goodwill Zwelithini has accused the provincial government of failing to pay him what he deserves, the Times newspaper is reporting.

 According to the paper, the king says he is not getting “financial recognition” although he receives an annual salary of more than 1 million rand (Sh7.6 million) and is entitled to a budget of nearly $4.5 million (Sh457 million) from the premier of KwaZulu-Natal’s office.

 King Zwelithini who was speaking at a King Shaka commemoration in the town of Stanger, in Kwazulu Natal province on Sunday said: “I do not get a stipend. There is no money I get from the government.

I do not get paid because the provincial government does not recognise me and the stipend I deserve as the king.”

According to the Times, the King’s royal household received $4.3 million (Sh436 million) this year, of which $1.2 million (Sh121 million) went towards staff salaries and the queens’ expenses.

Meanwhile, South Africa’s public broadcaster has apologised to Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, a leading politician, for referring to her as President Jacob Zuma’s ex-wife rather than using her name.
