Best 3 KCSE candidates in Lamu scored B plus

Results of this year's Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) exam for Lamu show that in spite of insecurity in recent years, performance has improved.

The results show that the only national schools in the area, Mpeketoni Boys and Lamu Girls, have more students qualifying for university. Yet the best candidate in the whole county scored B+. Only three candidates managed this.

Like all the ten national schools in the entire Coast, these two had no candidate scoring A grade. Three private schools, Light Academy, Memon Academy and Sheikh Khalifa of Mombasa County, shared the Coast's only six A plain grades.

The best candidate at Mpeketoni Secondary School was Kamau Samson Kahochio, who scored a B+, while Lamu Girls had two B+, producing the best results in the county.

The two are Fatma Salim and Ibtisam Hussein Farouk followed by Mercy Thoya and Jafary Ali with a B each.

Lamu Girls had a mean score of 5.5 while Mpeketoni had 5.2 points.

Bakanja Secondary School improved its mean score from 3.8 in 2018 to 5.2 this year. In 2018, one student qualified for university admission at Bakanja, but this year, 13 have attained the required grade.

Jackson Hedi scored a B while Margaret Nabiswa and Reltina Odda tied with a B-.

The learning environment in Lamu is less conducive even by Coast standards owing to the insecurity that has raged in the county since 2014, sparking an exodus of teachers and closure of schools.

Besides, Lamu remains economically and culturally backward as one of the only few counties without tarmacked roads and minimal electricity coverage.
