The county government will this week disburse Sh112 million in bursaries to 30,000 needy students.

Education Executive Hellen Chepkwony said the money would be sent directly to the beneficiaries' learning institutions.

"Those who applied for assistance from the county government bursary fund should not panic as their cheques have already been drawn and will be issued within the week," she said.

Ms Chepkwony was speaking at Kapsoit trading centre accompanied by her roads counterpart, Charles Birech, yesterday.

Meanwhile, University of Kabianga Vice Chancellor Wilson Kipngeno said the institution had acquired a new building in Kericho town in its expansion plans.

"We are working to ensure that the university complies with the Commission for University Education requirement that students must have adequate space for proper learning. That is why we have acquired the building," said Prof Kipngeno.

And Kenya National Union of Teachers county Executive Secretary Stanley Mutai has welcomed the return of school rankings in national examinations.

However, he wants ranking according to the number of candidates registered. He also wants the ratio of students to teachers and available infrastructure considered.

"A candidate who learns under a tree and is taught by untrained teachers should not be ranked in the same way as those with teachers and adequate facilities," Mr Mutai said yesterday.

President Uhuru Kenyatta recently assented to a Bill that returned ranking of schools in Standard Eight and Form Four examinations.
