Allow university students to resume class, MPs ask professional bodies

MPs want professional bodies to allow students to attend class as the Government sorts out the stalemate on accreditation. House Education Committee chairperson Sabina Chege said the Ministry of Education had set up a team to spearhead amendment of the Universities Act and also align the laws governing professional bodies. Speaking after touring the Technical University of Kenya’s engineering facilities with eight members of the team, Ms Chege said it was unfair to send the students home.

“Let them be taught as the universities move to get equipment and other required items in the spirit of transition,” said Chege.

Chege said that after assessing the facilities, the committee was convinced that the 1, 000 students who were sent home by the university on the instructions of the Engineers Board of Kenya should resume class. The board had said the university did not have enough lecturers and facilities to offer some engineering courses.
