Palaver

As if the lethal collaboration between Police Commish Mathew Iteere and AP Commandant Kinuthia Mbugua to keep Kenya sober is not enough, Amos Kimunya is threatening to re-introduce the dreaded Alco-Blow gadget. Scores of regular and Administration Police officers are on a countrywide mission to destroy thousands of litres of kangara, from which chang’aa is brewed. But now Alco-Blow will go a step further and create thousands of jobs for temporary drivers for car owners that may still want to enjoy a beer. There are real fears of Kenya becoming a sober nation.

Will the ruling by the Court of Arbitration for Sports (CAS) in favour of KFF’s rival, Football Kenya Limited bring an end to the dispute over the leadership of football in the country? In this premier World Cup year for Africa, can we finally start enjoying Pele’s "beautiful game"?

Agriculture minister Sally Kosgei needs to act fast for some University of Texas researchers have found that the substance that makes chilli peppers (pili pili to you and me) ‘hot’ is the key to stopping chronic pain. This means there is a literal goldmine in Red chilli peppers that contain the substance called capsaicin. To cash-in on a possible pharmaceutical industry bonanza just making painkillers, Dr Kosgei should offer subsidies and incentives to growers to pepper their farms with pili pili. We can’t go wrong on this one.

Has there ever been an uncontested election result in independent Africa? Cases in point can be found in Nigeria, Kenya, Zambia, Somalia, Egypt, Zimbabwe, Cote d’Ivoire, Tanzania, Uganda, Comoros, Madagascar, Algeria, Mauritania as well as Ethiopia. And now, Sudan. Losers are crying foul and words like ‘fraudulent’, ‘doctoring’, ‘intimidation’ and ‘rigging’ lace every sentence. The closest it came to a perfect general election was in South Africa and Ghana. Worrying statistics indeed.

And Finally...

From Mike Huckabee, a possible Republican presidential candidate in 2012: "Marriage has historically never meant anything other than a man and a woman. It has never meant two men, two women, a man and his pet, or a man and a whole herd of pets."
