Court freezes suspended KNH CEO assets worth Sh229 million

The Anti-Corruption High Court in Nairobi has frozen assets worth Sh229 million owned by suspended Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) chief executive, Evanson Njoroge Kamuri. Justice Lucy Njuguna, in her orders, directed that Njoroge should not deal, transfer or lease the properties listed by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) as alleged unexplained wealth. In the case, EACC's lawyer Olga Ochola told the court that the commission allegedly got information that there were procurement irregularities in the award of a medical oxygen generating plant and enterprise resource planning (ERP) system and supporting hardware and software components at KNH. Ochola claimed that the information was that Njoroge has allegedly engaged in abuse of office, leading to an investigation after obtaining orders to search his houses and bank accounts, and those of persons related or associated with him. The court heard that the probe allegedly unearthed that Njoroge had a total of Sh229 million which he could not explain. The EACC legal officer claimed that Njoroge had allegedly received a total of Sh114 million, which was received in his accounts at Housing Finance Corporation (HFC) Bank, National Bank of Kenya (NBK), and Standard Chartered Bank. He said that at HFC, Njoroge had Sh 600,000 while in NBK, he had Sh77.4 million. In the meantime, his two bank accounts at Standard Chartered had Sh162,000 and Sh34.7 million respectively, which were Sh1.5 million soft loan from Irene Mburu, Sh135,080 cash and Sh17.1 million from Alliance Realtors Limited. "Investigations revealed that during the period of investigation, when the respondent was suspected of corruption, he received through his bank accounts unexplained assets totaling Sh 114 million," claimed Ochola. At the same time, the officer claimed that Njogoe bought properties worth Sh115 million during the same period. According to him, he total wealth that the embattled chief executive has is Sh 466 million, which allegedly does not tally with his source of income. Ogola urged the court to order Njoroge to either forfeit the money and properties to the government or, in the alternative, force him to pay the contested amount to the government. He said that after writing to him, and considering his response, the commission was certain that he had an extra Sh 229 million which he could not justify the source. "The applicant received a response from the respondent vide a letter dated June 26, 2025, which response was considered, and after analysis, a cumulative asset value of Sh 237 million was found to have been satisfactorily explained, leaving out an unexplained disproportion of Sh 229 million," he claimed.
