Police in Kitui have arrested a man who has been masquerading as a relative of Kitui Governor Dr Julius Malombe.
The man whom the police said is an ex-Kamiti Prison convict has conned people by promising to get them jobs at the county government. He was arrested at Kitui Bus terminus yesterday by a battery of CID officers following the Governor’s complaint to the police.
Kitui OCPD Lillian Okembo said the man identified as Moses Munyalo was arrested while waiting for some of his clients whom he had promised to secure jobs at the county government using his relationship with the Governor.
“We have been trailing him for some time now following reports that he is conning unsuspecting members of the public in order to secure them jobs in the county. The Governor complained to us and we had to act swiftly,” Ms Okembo said.
The OCPD said the fraudster had swindled close to 100 people of unknown amounts of money with his bogus promises.
Mr Malombe said recruitment into the county government would be free and fair noting that people should not fall prey to fraudsters since the jobs will be offered on merit.
Meanwhile, Kisii County Judge Justice Ruth Sitati has warned members of the public to be weary of conmen posing as lawyers outside the local law courts.
She called on members of the public seeking legal services at the court to be extra vigilant, saying the conmen were pretending to assist clients.
“The self proclaimed lawyers acting as brokers at times pose as court attendants to siphon money from innocent clients, they are busy bodies who are in the court premises with ill intentions,” she said.
She further stated that no one will be allowed to give out cash outside court premises without receipt.
The judge was speaking yesterday during the launch of the customer care service centre, a security bay and KCB branch at the court premises.
