Veteran Wahome defy odds to lead at Seafront Mombasa

[Maarufu Mohamed, Standard] Veteran golfer Martin Wahome playing off handicap 10 braved heavy downpour and strong winds from the nearby Indian Ocean to win the A Division in the May Mug trophy at the par 71 Seaside Mombasa Golf Course on Saturday. He carded an excellent 68 nett from the day long 18-hole tourney to emerge the winner. The club's green keeper Tirus Githaiga playing off handicap 12 was the runners up on 74 nett while the club's former Captain Lawrence Odhiambo was third with 76 nett in the Club Casino-sponsored tournament. Club Captain James Gitonga playing off handicap 18 was not left behind after struggling in carding 70 nett to emerge the B Division winner, while handicap 13 George Thama on 72nett and handicap 18 Jacob Theuri with 73 nett were the runners up and third placed respectively. The C Division was won by handicap 28 Arbanus Kimenye on 64 nett ahead of handicap 19 Justine Ongere with 67 nett and taking the third slot on a count back score of 70 nett after returning the same score was the club's Chairman Paul Munyao. Handicap 29 Maj. Ken Kimundi was the Division D winner on 71 nett and the best Gross prize was again won by Martin Wahome on a count back score of seven over par 78 gross, while handicap 23 Peter Wambari emerged the Best Guest player on 72 nett. Nyali Golf and Country Club's Lady captain Mary Mariga playing off handicap 14 taught her Lady opponents a lesson after returning 72 nett to claim the June Medal winner in the Division 1 category as veteran handicap 16 Florence Karimi finished second on 83 nett. The Division 2 was won by handicap 24 Susan Mwangi on a count back score of 73 nett after tying on the same score with the Club's Lady captain handicap 35 Fiona Mbandi who was the runners up. Diana Nthiwa playing off handicap 47 was the Division 3 winner with 72 nett and the Best Guest Prize was won by handicap 32 Prisca Jebet who had a score of 71 nett. Club Chairman Paul Munyao announced that next Saturday the club will be hosting the 2023 Kambersome golf tourney and urged golfers to turn up in large numbers to make the day successful. Handicap 6 Simon Ndung'u was the Men's winner on 31 points while handicap 11 Eng. K Chege who scored 27 points settled for the runners up slot. Naomi Kimata playing off handicap 13 won the Lady's title on 27 points and coming in second was Winnie Mugo with 19 points. The Junior prize was won by handicap 18 Garcia Kimemia on 28 points while Ndegwa Thuku and Lucy maina were the Longest drive men and lady winners respectively. And at Kakamega Golf Club Chairman Dr.Catherine Aura led her team of Ronald Omondi, Beatrice Otieno, and Derek Mwaura carded a combined score of 114 points, to clinch the overall title at the 5th leg of the KCB East Africa Golf Tour, played at the Club's 9-hole course on Saturday. The team now qualifies to participate in the tour's grand finale slated for November this year at the Karen Country Club in Nairobi. "This is a well-deserved win for us. Throughout the last week, we had been practicing as a team to sharpen our skills and get ready for the series. I can say teamwork and our passion for the game worked for us. I know we will be up against the creme de la creme in the grand finale, so we must go back to practicing and playing more to be able to compete at the highest level come November, "said Aura on behalf of the team. Sanjiv Walias, Dr. Protus Oketch, Justus Oyiengo and Logan Busolo with a combined total of 110 points emerge second and will also participate in the grand finals. The series that brought together a field of 100 golfers from different golf courses in the country saw handicap 25 golfer Ondino Abubakar card an impressive score of 41 stable ford points to be crowned the Individual overall winner. Handicap 19 Lydia Oketch carded 35 stable ford points to win the lady winner prize while E. Mbakaya playing off handicap 23 won the men winner award after carding 35 stable ford points. Geoffrey Yego who earlier booked a slot in the grand finale of the tour during the 4th leg of the series won the longest drive prize in the men category while Dr. Irine Ashioya won the longest drive award in the ladies' category. Dharama Sharma playing off handicap 19 returned 35 points to win the guest prize while handicap 25 Eliud Siganga won the staff winner on 34 points. KCB hosted an introductory golf clinics yesterday on Sunday at the Club targeted at ladies and junior golfers followed by a tree planting session at the same venue. The clinics which are aimed at growing the reach of the sport of golf in the country, have so far reached over 300 participants. Action now moves to the sixth leg of the Tour scheduled to be held at the Nyanza Golf Club from June 9-11th.
