Schools, journalists and youth groups get environment awards

Primary schools, journalists, women and youth groups were among winners of the phase four of the Netfund Green Innovation Awards 2020.

Under counties category, Garissa County won, Kitui came second and Uasin Gishu (third). 

Former Citizen TV journalist Enock Sikolia won in the journalists category with his story on Garbage River, pocketing Sh250,000, followed by Wanjohi Kabukuru who got Sh200,000 for writing environmental articles on climate change. 

Climate resilience award went to Charles Mureithi who got Sh250,000, Bidii Yetu na Kazi Women Group also received Sh250,000 and Rutto Kiptarus went home with Sh150,000.

Lenana Girls High School won in waste management category followed by Kitengela Hot Glass Ltd. 

Cabinet Secretary for Environment and Forestry Keriako Tobiko in a speech read on his behalf by Chief Administrative Secretary Mohammed Elmi, said the awards are a key component in actualisation of the Ministry's strategic goals.

“The awards are important to catalyse green innovations especially at grassroots level and provide much-needed impetus in job creation and poverty alleviation,” said Elmi.

The environmental awards, which were established in 2014 seek to enhance public awareness on climate change and environmental education.
