The Government has temporarily suspended the ongoing internally displaced persons' (IDPs) compensation exercise in Kisii and Nyamira counties.

This suspension came as it emerged that some politicians and co-ordinators of the exercise had a different list from the one initially presented to the Government.

Addressing the IDPs at Gusii Stadium, Kisii County Commissioner Samuel Njora called on Kenya Commercial Bank to immediately stop making payments until the names were vetted by State officers.

"Everybody should move back to his or her sub-county headquarters and get further clarification from their assistant county commissioners. Some people included the names of their relatives, thinking that the Government would not verify the list," said Mr Njora.

He said the names of genuine beneficiaries would have to be verified by church leaders and chiefs.

"We will not allow cartels to take over Government processes," he said. "Those who ferried fake individuals here should take them back."

Only 500 people have been paid so far.
