Robbery suspect killed in Kibera

Tension engulfed Kibera after a suspected thief was torched and a police officer arrested over attempted robbery claims.

There was also a threat of communal attacks and a fight between the two predominant communities in the slums, but area leaders moved in quickly to calm the situation.

A planned protest went wrong on Tuesday evening when youths allied to the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) allegedly threw stones at a mosque, damaging property and disrupting evening prayers.

The youth were protesting against remarks by Gatundu South MP Moses Kuria.

Area MP Kenneth Okoth yesterday condemned the incident, saying it should not be viewed as a fight between the Luo and the Nubian community (who are mainly Muslims).

"We have apologised and agreed that any suspicion and misunderstanding will be resolved through dialogue. We will also repair the damaged windows of the mosque by the end of the day," said Mr Okoth.

The suspects had taken advantage of the demos to rob a woman of Sh490,000 that she was taking to a bank from an MPesa shop.

Police say the arrested officer was in the company of the man who was torched and was saved by officers on patrol before he could be lynched.

Kilimani police boss Peter Katam said the mob that lynched the suspect also shared the money that had been robbed. The suspects were fleeing the scene of the robbery when an alarm was raised.
