David Mwiraria summoned to court over Sh10 billion Anglo Leasing case

Former Finance Minister David Mwiraria

Nairobi, Kenya: Former Finance Minister David Mwiraria has been ordered to appear in court on November 23 to face charges over the Sh10 billion Anglo Leasing scandal.

Chief Magistrate Felix Kombo issued the summons after he was informed that Mwiraria has regained health and he can stand trial.

“I have seen the medical report and inclined to agree with the state that Mr Mwiraria is fit to stand trial. I do hereby issue summons for him to appear in court and plead to the charges leveled against him,” Mr Kombo said in his brief ruling.

Mwiraria had in March been given three months to recuperate after being taken seriously ill before answering charges after his lawyer Kioko Kilukumi, said he was bedridden and his doctor required time to monitor his health.

The medical report from Kenyatta National Hospital presented in court Tuesday indicates that Mwiararia is stable. The Director of Public Prosecutions made recommendations that Mwiraria be charged alongside Deepak Kamani, Rashmi Kamani and Chamanlal Kamani.

At the same time, Senior Assistant DPP told court that one of the suspects who is an American national will be a prosecution witnesses.

The Kamani brothers have been charged and denied having participated in the Anglo Leasing Scandal.

The Kamani family last week lost bid to have the criminal case quashed, after the judge found no sufficient evidence was adduced to demonstrate that they will not get fair trial.
