Mzee Kenyatta’s memorial: Uhuru says unity will help Kenya overcome challenges

NAIROBI: President Uhuru Kenyatta has called on Kenyans to embrace national unity and harmony to overcome the challenges facing the nation.

He said the country requires all Kenyans to work together to achieve the objectives set out by nation’s forefathers including fighting disease, hunger and poverty.

“If we were to work together and if we were to live to the ideals of our forefathers, we would definitely be able to achieve great things for this country,” President Kenyatta said.

The President was speaking at the Holy Family Minor Basilica in Nairobi during the 37th anniversary memorial service for the nation’s founding father, Mzee Jomo Kenyatta.

Paying tribute to the late Mzee Kenyatta, the Head of State urged Kenyans to reflect on their lives and their individual contribution to the country’s development.

“Mine is to request each one of us to consider what we can do to further the dreams of our forefathers,” the President said.

First Lady Margaret Kenyatta, other member of the first family, led by former First Lady Mama Ngina Kenyatta, and a number of other dignitaries attended the memorial service.

Earlier, President Kenyatta led the first family in laying wreaths at Mzee Kenyatta’s mausoleum at Parliament buildings.

Others who laid wreaths were Chief of Defence Forces Gen. Samson Mwathethe, National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi and Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero.
