‘Help Joseph Ole Lenku win war on terror’

By Ponciano Odongo

Kajiado, Kenya: Leaders affiliated to the Jubilee coalition in Kajiado County have asked opposition leaders to stop attacking the Interior Cabinet Secretary Joseph Ole Lenku but instead join hands with government and members of public to fight insecurity.

This comes as terror attacks occasion stepping up of security across the county.

“We are wondering why leaders openly criticise the Interior Cabinet Secretary instead of fighting the monster of terrorism. Let Kenyans know that we are behind Ole Lenku since the president appointed him due to his capability,” said Johnson Osoi, Kajiado County Assembly Speaker.

Criminal activities

Accompanied by five members of the county assembly at Ndalalakutu in Kajiado central, the speaker urged residents to step up the war against terrorism by keeping tabs on their neighbours and reporting strangers suspected to be involved in criminal activities to the police.

Meanwhile, Kajiado leaders are now united to fight retrogressive cultural practices like Female Genital Mutilation (FGM). Speaking at Ilbisil yesterday while celebrating with over two hundred young men who had undergone a cultural rite of passage in the area, Kajiado central Member of Parliament, General Joseph Nkaisserry said Kenyan laws would no longer spare those involved in circumcision of girls.

In a separate function the county assembly speaker, Mr Johnson Osoi led the Kajiado County Assembly members in condemning the practice at Ndalalakutu where a new area chief was being installed.

“Leaders in this county have agreed to support the war against FGM and those who insist on it must prepare to face the law,” said General Nkaissery.

 Government stand

Accompanied by Chief Manager, Tana Athi Water and Sewerage Company, Eng Samwel Oruma the legislator told chiefs to represent the government on this matter instead of siding with the proponents of the vice.

Kajiado central Deputy County commissioner, Henry Katana, who officially installed the chief said FGM had negatively affected girl child education in the area and assured locals that the war must be won to protect the girl child.

This comes about three weeks after a 13-year-old young girl bled to death in the area after undergoing the cut.

Eng Oruma urged the young men to get education for better future.

“As a community, we need to keep our rich culture but fight poverty by working hard to acquire education,” said Engineer Oruma.

Rural parts of Kajiado County have the highest school dropouts in the country estimated to 45 per cent.
