Commission barred from switching off RMS frequencies

Nairobi, Kenya: High Court has issued an order stopping the Communications Commission of Kenya (CCK) from switching off broadcast frequencies of the Royal Media Services.

CCK on Saturday switched off six illegally operated frequencies in different parts of the country belonging to the broadcaster. CCK says the six are among 17 unauthorised transmitter stations for which a 30-day notice was issued in December 2012.

The six transmitter stations switched off are in Narok, Nakuru, Mukuyuni and Mbaru.

While justifying the action, CCK said that the operations were a threat to the aviation industry and Kenya's airspace since they interfered with the communication between pilots and the control towers especially at the landing stages.
