A woman was arrested and ten kilogrammes of methamphetamine narcotics valued at Sh84 million recovered from her as she alighted from a bus in Nairobi.

The woman identified as Grace Nandalwa had arrived from Kampala, Uganda Thursday morning when detectives from Special Crimes Prevention Unit and anti-narcotics pounced on her at the Coast Buses’ stop.

She had tied the psychotropic drugs in food stuffs which included bananas and potatoes when police burst her. Head of Special Crimes Prevention Unit Mr Said Kiprotich said she is expected in court Friday to face charges of possessing and trafficking the drugs.

Kiprotich said police had been tipped off the woman is a regular trafficker of the drugs before they moved into action by monitoring her movement.

“She had taken possession of the luggage that contained the narcotics when officers intercepted her and declared to her she was under arrest over what she knew she was carrying,” said Kiprotich.

The police boss added they had conducted tests and established the drugs are methamphetamine, which has been placed under the United Nations Convention on Psychotropic Substances Treaty.

In abuse the drug Methamphetamine increases alertness, concentration, energy, and in high doses, can induce euphoria, enhance self-esteem and increase libido.

Kiprotich said methamphetamine has a high potential for abuse and addiction, activating the psychological reward system.

“Abuse may also lead to post-withdrawal syndrome which can last for several months and can be harming. It is a banned drug in our country and many other places in the world,” said Kiprotich.

Police said they were investigating the source and destination of the substances. The woman is a Kenyan and her traveling documents showed she had been to and from Kampala on several occasions.
