Tana clashes inquiry starts next week

The judicial inquiry into the violence that rocked the Tana River Delta three weeks ago will start on Monday.

The Commission of Inquiry into the clashes will hold the first sitting in Mombasa when Attorney General Githu Muigai will address it on its mandate and formally launch the probe.

The commission headed by High Court Judge Grace Nzioka will then visit the scene of the clashes in Tana River County, where 113 people including police officers were killed.

The inquiry, expected to be completed in 30 days, takes the shape of the Waki inquiry into the 2007 and 2008 post-election violence.

Galole MP Dhadho Godhana has already been charged in connection with the violence.

The Cabinet also approved the formation of a commission to investigate the genesis of the chaos, a move opposed by some political leaders.

Justice Nzioka is deputised by Chief Magistrate Emily Ominde. Senior Principal Magistrate Abdulqadir Lorot is also a commissioner.
