Suspected militants killed by improvised explosive in Lamu

Three suspected al-Shabaab militants died after an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) they were planting on the road exploded at Kwa-Omollo in Lamu East sub-county.

Lamu acting County Commissioner Mr David Lusaka said the militants were targeting security agents on patrol when the device went off.

He said security officers are combing the area after only two bodies were found at the site of explosion.

"So far our security team are able to account for one body they are still combing the area in search of any other body,” said Lusava.

Lusava said the road was closed following the incident

The General Service Unit said the militants were planting the device at about midnight at Kwa Omolo on the Bodhei-Bargoni Road.

Police reports indicated that three militants were killed in the explosion.

"On Thursday between 0030 hrs and 0200hrs at “Kwa Omollo” along Bodhei- Baragoni Road, al-Shabaab militants were in an apparent mission to plant IEDS on the road," stated the police report.

"The same explosive went off killing three of them, two bodies were recovered at the scene while the third was buried in the bush about 500 metres from the scene,” the report stated.

The security team combing the area were able to get 3 loaded AK 47 with magazines, 12 rounds and  Magazine pouch, were also recovered at the scene.

Lusava said security agencies are on the ground combing the area citing communication barrier due to poor network connectivity.
