Armed gunmen kill three in troubled Kisauni estate, Mombasa

Three people were killed by armed gunmen in Kisauni, Mombasa County.

Police said two men armed with a pistol and knives killed three civilians in a botched robbery targeting an Mpesa outlet on Sunday night in Zimlat area in Shanzu.

According to police, the suspects tried to rob an Mpesa agent but members of the public raised alarm prompting them to shoot aimlessly as they escaped.

Four others were seriously injured in the scuffle leaving deep cuts on some parts of their bodies. They were admitted at the Coast General Hospital where they are receiving treatment.

The deceased have been identified as Hassan Ngao, 46, Bernard Rioba, 46, and Alphonce Tsuma, 50.

Kisauni Police boss Sangura Msee said three men in two separate motorbikes tried to rob an Mpesa agent in the 9pm incident.

"The suspects used something like a 'baruti' to scare the public away. They shot around aimlessly when police were alerted, fearing they will be accosted," said Msee.

The Police boss noted that the area where the incident happened is insecure.

Residents were unable to note the motorcycle registration number as the suspects sped off.

He said the suspects did not steal anything from the Mpesa outlet.

He however called on anyone with information to come forth saying it would be treated as confidential. "We have mounted search in all areas and of we are following some crucial leads. We want to urge those operating Mpesa outlets to be vigilant,” he cautioned.
