Heroin and bhang found in Lamu West MP's truck

Police in Lamu Wednesday impounded a truck belonging to Lamu West Member of Parliament Julius Ndegwa after they found it loaded with marijuana and heroin.

The police at Witu had flagged down the truck reported to have been ferrying goods from Mombasa to Lamu and found the drugs after searching it.

Last evening, the MP admitted the vehicle belongs to him but denied any connection to the drugs.

Police drove the truck to Mpeketoni while the driver and conductor were taken to Witu Police Station and are expected to be arraigned in court today.

According to County Commander Robert Kitur, the truck was carrying 20O bags of cement and on reaching Witu, it was intercepted by police officers and 340 rolls of bhang and 24 sachets of heroine valued at Sh195,000 and Sh240,000 respectively were recovered.

But when The Standard asked Mr Kitur if the drugs belonged to the Member of Parliament, he claimed that he did not know.

"I don't know the owner. What is important is that the drugs were found and the suspects – the driver and his conductor – have been arrested and will be charged tomorrow," he said.

However, Mr Ndegwa distanced himself from the drugs arguing that it could have been a deal between the driver and the conductor.

"The truck is mine and as far as I understand it was supposed to ferry cement from Mombasa to Lamu and I don't know how the drugs got in the vehicle. But I suspect that it was a deal between the driver and the conductor," said Ndegwa.
