Medical student drowns in swimming pool at Kenol

A swimming expedition turned tragic after a medical student drowned at a hotel's swimming pool in Murang’a South.

Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) student Joseph Mbugua drowned in a swimming at Kenol market, while in a company of his three colleagues from the Thika campus.

The 21-year-old and a third year student was on a swimming expedition when he allegedly drowned at Golden Palm Hotel swimming pool.

Murang’a South District Criminal Investigation Officer Mr David Cheruiyot said his colleagues alerted the authorities of the incident.

The police, he said have launched investigations to establish whether the death of the third year student was pre-determined or he drowned.

“The police are determined to establish cause of the student’s death. An inquest file has been opened at Makuyu Police Station,” said Cheruiyot.

Family of the 21-year-old student, has engaged a private pathologist to represent them in a second autopsy.

Through a spokesman, Mr Stephen Gathemba, the family will be involved in the post-mortem as it suspects a foul play.

Gathemba said the second autopsy will give new direction into the matter.

“The family want a second autopsy conducted in our presence. We are yet to understand how he drowned in a small swimming pool yet he knows how to swim,” said Gathemba.
