A civic leader has died after attacks by  suspected gang of robbers who raided his home in Kigumo constituency, Murang’a County.

Councillor Obed Thuo alias Wathu died at Maragua District hospital. His wife Dorcas Muthoni, who sustained serious injuries, is recuperating at Murang’a District hospital.

The incident is reported to have occurred on Wednesday night when the couple was dragged out of their car by the thugs at the gate of their homestead in Muthithi location.

It is said a 15-man gang armed with crude weapons descended on the couple leaving them for death before Good Samaritans rushed them to the Maragua hospital.

Locals in Kigumo called for improved security to ensure safety of the residents.

Crucial leads
Kigumo Deputy OCPD Juma Londo asked the public to help in the investigations. He said a manhunt for the criminals has started and the police were pursuing crucial leads.

“The police are on the ground hunting the criminals and public co-operation is highly required,” said Londo.
After attacking the two, the gang sneaked into the family home taking off with an unknown amount of cash, mobile phone and a DVD.

Deals went sour
Residents suspect his political or business rivals could have wanted him dead after deals went sour. The civic leader had earlier indicated his intention to run for a political post in the county.

Yesterday, Kigumo DC Albanaso Ndiso said police are gathering information on the case.

The DC described the deceased as a leader who interacted and participated in community programmes.

Muthithi area experienced calm despite years of being Mungiki sect bedrock where several people were killed.
Leaders from the region led by Gatanga MP Peter Kenneth mourned his death.
