Partnership to clear waste from Kisumu

Kisumu’s business community led by Kenya Association of Manufacturers (KAM) has reaffirmed its commitment to partner with the municipal council in taking care of the environment. At a recent tree-planting day held in Kisumu’s Taifa Park, KAM expressed concern over the slow pace at which the council was implementing agreed upon actions in the region.

Citing the Kachok dumpsite, the business community said this was an eyesore. The council’s commitment to relocate it has not been implemented.

Deputy Town Clerk Ms Elizabeth Otieno assured the business community of the council’s commitment to make changes within the town. She reiterated that the relocation of the dumpsite was on track despite a few hiccups and further noted that plans to relocate hawkers were at an advanced stage.

"Land has been acquired from the Rift Valley Railways and is being prepared for this relocation. It will soon be ready for the hawkers’ use," said Ms Otieno.

Kisumu Mayor Sam Okello emphasised the importance of continuous dialogue between the Government and private sector.
