Two charged with being in possession of fake 163,000 dollars

Two men were on Tuesday charged with being in possession of fake US Dollars and Kenyan shillings.

Isaac Omwaka and Wesley Kinyanjui were charged with being in possession of $16300 (Sh16 million) all in 100 denominations with intent to defraud the public.

They were further charged with being in possession of 56 additional pieces of the Kenyan Shillings which were in Sh1, 000 denominations.

The two were arrested at Bukura, Shinyalu sub-county on April 21 in a flat they had rented after officers attached to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) received a tip-off from the public of dubious activities.

The officers stormed the house where they found the two inside and ordered them to open the safe which contained the money.

They recovered digital cash safe, serial number 60035006 and its key alongside ink believed to be used in the manufacture of the fake currencies.

The DCI also recovered two pieces of Sh100 used in the illegal activity.

They denied the charges before Kakamega Chief Magistrate Bildad Ochieng.

Through lawyer Aggrey Musiega, the two applied to be released on reasonable bond terms saying they are not a flight risk and that they are ready to attend court whenever required.

Mr Ochieng’ ordered that they are released upon execution of Sh100,000 bond with a surety of similar amount or an alternative of Sh50,000 cash bail.

Their case shall be mentioned on May 6 and heard on July 29.
