Basketball: Zetech Sparks edge Africa Nazarene University

Maureen Bosibori yesterday staged a brilliant show to steer Zetech University Sparks to their fourth win of the ongoing Kenya Basketball Federation (KBF) women’s Premier League at Nyayo Gymnasium.

Evergreen Bosibori was on fire sinking 21 points to lead her side to a 58-48 victory against African Nazarene University (ANU).

Teresa Oloo and Lucy Musyoki scored 13 and 11 points for Zetech while Karen Shihundu top scored for ANU with eight points whereas Lynn Saliamo and Nicole Adhiambo added seven each. The win increased Zetech’s chances of making it to the playoffs.

On the other hand, the victory summed up a disappointing weekend out for promoted ANU who lost their Saturday tie to last season’s semi-finalists Strathmore University Swords.

Zetech coach Maurice Obilo said they are looking to make the best out of their remaining first leg matches so as to enhance their chances of sealing a last eight slot.

“We want to qualify for the playoffs. We have won four out of seven matches and we are looking to gain points from our remaining four first leg matches for us to inch closer to achieving our purpose. The girls are also working hard because they are determined to make it to the quarter-final playoffs,” Obilo said.

Zetech made their intentions to bag a fourth win known from the start with Bosibori and Oloo calling the shots in their opponents’ half as they took a 22-12 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Fearless ANU then tightened their defence minimising Zetech’s chances of scoring more points as they pressed deep into their territory to take the second quarter 13-10.

Zetech, however, remained in control of the game with a 32-25 half-time advantage.

Bosibori and her teammates scored 26 points against ANU’s 23 in the second half to bag maximum points.

In other matches, former champions Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) and Tangit Sparks bounced back from Saturday’s losses to beat Eagle Wings and United States International University of Africa (USIU-A) Flames at the same venue.

KPA, who had suffered a shock 52-55 loss to Storms on Saturday, overcame Eagle Wings 54-43 to register their second win this season.

Selina Okumu starred for the dockers with 15 points while Lucy Machuma scored 11 for Eagle Wings.

KPA, who are seeking to reclaim the title they relinquished to Equity Bank Hawks last season, won the match in the first half after taking a 26-15 advantage.

The two sides played to a level 28-28 score in the second half with the 11 points lead taken in the first and second quarters making the difference between the two.

Tangit, who had also lost 57-64 to Kenyatta University (KU) Oryx, recovered to trounce USIU-A Flames 71-33.
