Prices of major household products remain stable in July, says KNBS

The prices of consumer products increased at a slower rate of 4.36 per cent in July occasioned by favourable weather, tax reliefs offered by Government and depressed demand following job losses.

In June, prices of goods and services increased by 4.59 per cent, according to data from the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS).

This was the slowest increase in prices of goods and services- technically known as inflation- since the country reported its first case of Covid-19 in early March.

Food and non-alcoholic beverage which take up a huge space in a typical Kenyan’s shopping basket declined by 0.8 per cent in July compared to June.

Some of the food items that registered a decline in price in the period under review include tomatoes, Irish potatoes, spinach, onions and Sukuma wiki. Offals, colloquially known as Matumbo, also registered a drop in price.

Rent prices also went down. “On the other hand, the cost of electricity and kerosene went up 0.5 per cent and 4.11 per cent, respectively,” said KNBS Director General Zachary Mwangi in a statement
