Nairobi City County will soon implement new measures aimed at ending traffic congestion in the city.
Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero said yesterday that public service vehicles (PSVs) will be licensed to ferry passengers through the city to ease traffic congestion.
Dr Kidero said PSV routes will also be changed and no PSVs will be allowed to park in bus termini waiting for passengers. This, he said, will enable PSVs to transport people moving from one town or estate to another without necessarily terminating the journey within the city.
“We will ensure that we give licences to PSVs to cross the city and not stay within the city. We must decongest the city – even though the decisions is harsh, we must do this,” said Kidero.
He said this when he hosted members of the newly constituted Transport and Urban Decongestion Committee chaired by Marion Mutungi in his office. Private car owners and taxis will also feel the pinch should Kidero implement his city decongestion strategy.
“We will consider banning them from accessing the town centre because we have realised that taxis have turned the city into a dumping site where they come in the morning and dump their cars the whole day; this must change,” said Kidero.
He said that plans were underway to tag the taxis and give them parking space outside the city centre.
