USIU-A stun Kisumu Lakers in KHU Premier League

United States International University of Africa (USIU-A) women picked their second win of the 2022 season after narrowly edging out hosts Lakers Hockey Club in a Kenya Hockey Union (KHU) Women’s Premier League played at Simba Club in Kisumu.

Kenyan international Rhoda Kuira scored the lone goal of the match in the 47th minute to hand the university side three important points as the league starts to slowly pick pace.

Victory takes USIU-A joint top of the standings on seven points, same as Strathmore University who are not in action this weekend.

USIU have so far registered two wins and a draw. They have defeated Lakers (1-0), Sliders (2-0) and drew against defending champions Blazers (1-1).

Speaking after the match, USIU head coach Willis Okeyo said he was happy with the win on the road and will now recollect and work on their mistakes after the Easter break.

“Winning away games is not always an easy feat. I am proud of how the girls executed their plays. We were not good enough in terms of dominating the game but we were patient enough and took the one clear opportunity we had and scored.”

“This strong start to the season is a result of hard work and training every day. Two wins out of three is not bad and now we will rest up and recollect again after Easter,” said Okeyo.

His Lakers counterpart Austin Tuju said lack of training cost them the game but believes they still have the chance to come back stronger as it is their first league match.

“Training has become very expensive for us, a non-sponsored them with no resources. Majority of players are coming from different parts of the region namely Kakamega, Maseno and Kisumu and to bring them together is still a struggle.”

“Nevertheless, we have to try hard and bring the team together weekly to improve the team chemistry and communication. We still have a long way to go and I believe we will bounce back,” said Tuju.

KHU Leagues break for two weeks for the Easter weekend tournament. The league will resume on April 23.
