Covid-19: 32 die, 133 in ICU as 800 test positive in last 24 hours

Kenya on Sunday recorded 800 new Covid-19 cases in the past 24 hours, from a sample of 6,530 raising the country's caseload to 211,828. 

In a statement, Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe said the new infections take the country’s positivity rate to 12.3 per cent and cumulated tests conducted so far to 2,190,806.

Out of the new patients, 414 are male, whereas 386 are female, with the youngest carrier being a two-month-old baby, and the oldest aged 98.

Of the new cases, 23 are foreigners while the rest are Kenyans.

Distribution

In terms of counties distribution Nairobi leads with 286, Mombasa 102, Kiambu 101, Kitui 41, Taita Taveta 40, Nakuru 30, Turkana 29, Kajiado 22, Murang’a 21, Kilifi and Uasin Gishu 18 cases each, Machakos 13, Nandi 11, Garissa 10, Nyeri 9, Meru 7, Bomet 6, Embu 5, Laikipia and Lamu 4 cases each, Nyandarua 3, Kakamega, Kirinyaga, Kisii, Kwale, Narok and Siaya 2 cases each, Homa Bay, Busia, ISIOLO, Kisumu, Makueni, Elgeyo Marakwet and Kericho a case each.

Kenya’s Covid-19 toll reached 4,149 after 32 patients succumbed to the virus in the last 24 hours.

The total recoveries so far stand at 197,307 after 278 patients recovered from the disease in the last 24 hours with 129 from the Home-Based and Isolation care programme while 149 are from various health facilities in the country.

Of the total recoveries, 157,978 are from the Home Based Isolation Care programme while 39,329 are from various hospitals countrywide.

A total of 1,719 patients are currently admitted to various health facilities countrywide, while 7,783 patients are on Home Based Isolation and Care.

One hundred and thirty-three (133) patients are in the ICU, 58 of whom are on ventilatory support and 68 on supplemental oxygen. Seven patients are on observation.

Another 579 patients are separately on supplemental oxygen with 542 of them in general wards and 37 in the High Dependency Unit (HDU).

Vaccination

Kenya has at August 8, 2021, administered 1,800,174 vaccines across the country.

Of these, the total first doses are 1,102,232 while the second doses are 697,942.

The uptake of the second dose by Priority Groups is as follows: Aged 58 years and above 214,473, others 205,410, Health Workers 120,061, Teachers 101,875 while Security Officers are at 56,123.

The uptake of the second dose among those who received their first dose is at 63.4 per cent with the majority being males at 55 per cent while females are at 45 per cent. The proportion of adults fully vaccinated is 2.6 per cent.
