23 more die, elderly dominate Covid-19 fatalities list

The elderly people make up the majority of Kenyans who have succumbed to Covid-19 since the pandemic struck over a year ago, the Ministry of Health (MoH) says.

The ministry’s data also revealed there were only about 200 people below 30 years have died from Covid-19.

The daily statistics released to the public by MoH reported there were some 1, 857 Kenyans aged 60 and above have succumbed to the virus.

The data shared from Afya House states, 705 people aged between 50 and 59 years have lost the battle, 422 others in their 40s and 290 more in their 30’s have succumbed.

This comes when the country has recorded 23 more deaths in the last 24 hours bringing the cumulative fatalities to 3, 484.

“All of them (the 23 deaths) being late deaths reported after conducting facility audit records in the month of June,” Health CS Mutahi Kagwe said.

In the last 24 hours, 583 people have tested positive for the virus from a sample size of 6,686. The positivity rate is now 8.7%.

“From the cases, 561 are Kenyans while 22 are foreigners. 316 are males and 267 females. The youngest is a five-month-old baby while the oldest is 101 years,” Kagwe’s statement read in part

Total confirmed positive cases are now 179,876 and cumulative tests conducted so far are 1,913,782.

Nairobi took the lion’s share of the new infections at 111, Siaya at 57 infections, Kisumu

51, Kericho 46, Mombasa 43, Busia 39, Nakuru 25, Nyamira 24, Kakamega 21, Homa Bay 20 as the other counties recorded less than 20 cases each.

85 patients have recovered from the disease, 60 from the home-based and isolation while 25 are from different health facilities countrywide. Total recoveries now stand at 123,050.

 So far, the proportion of adults fully vaccinated is less than 1% of the 50million Kenyans.
