Kisii soapstone carvers to get free cancer screening

Some 1,000 soapstone carvers in Tabaka will participate in a cancer awareness programme dubbed 'Soften the Cancer Sting' tomorrow.

The event, organised by the African Arts Promotion Network (Apron), is aimed at raising awareness on cancer cases and related mortality rates experienced by the artisan community in the area.

In the recent past, many artisans in the soapstone region of the county have succumbed to cancer. Apron Project Co-ordinator Elkana Ong'esa said doctors, researchers, nurses and paramedics from different hospitals in the country have partnered with their network to raise awareness and carry out free medical camps.
